🌧️ Rain Rain Go Away — A Monsoon Short Story

A rainy bus stand at night with two strangers sharing a glance under umbrellas — illustration for the short story Rain Rain Go Away

It started as a drizzle, but a sudden gust of wind made it a heavy shower. The bus stand was almost empty, with only a mom n a child. The kid was busy with a video on a phone n the mom was waiting for their ride.

Raj came running with his umbrella, stood at the stand, looked at his watch, "Oh shit, I just missed it. Wait for the next one". Looking at the sky and thinking about his college project, something flavourful touched his nose, and the aroma was not from something but from someone.

Nikita, with her laptop bag and a small, handy umbrella, was a beauty in white. Shooking her head and making her hair a bit less wet thought why in this rain she wore this white only to have more after work. "Thank God, I arrived on time or else more waste of time".

Their eyes collided, first by chance, then by hesitation, again by compulsion; something was telling both to just start a war of blinks, but on a slower version. This fraction of time seems like a decade.. No, a century of knowing, as if a twin flame. A thunderstorm just jolted both and made them aware of the scenario, and then the honk of the bus; it was her ride home.

Bus at stand with opened gate, slow was the walk like a baby bear, she went but reluctantly gave an anxious look "Who's he ?" The door closed, the engine ran, and he was looking with awe "Who's she?" Rain was coming towards it end, and the song on the phone: "Rain, rain go away, come again another day".

Waiting for the next rain and the next time ...
